Business Engineer
On behalf of our client, Procom is currently seeking a Business Engineer for a 12 month contract in Richmond, BC.
Business Engineer Role Details:
The Business Engineer service bridges business and technology by engaging stakeholders and users to understand workflows, needs, and goals. It translates these insights into clear requirements, user stories, and prioritized backlogs that guide product development. The service ensures alignment with business outcomes through continuous validation and stakeholder collaboration. It leverages user research and design thinking to create intuitive, user-centered solutions. Working within Agile and DevOps practices, it supports iterative delivery, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. The service also maintains traceability, facilitates communication, and provides user support and training. Overall, it ensures delivery of high-value, scalable, and effective products.Business Process Engineer Responsibilities:
- Engage closely with business users and stakeholders to understand their workflows, pain points, and objectives; translate these insights into clear product requirements and workflow documentation to drive continuous product improvement.
- Elicit, analyze, and document business and non-functional requirements, transforming them into clear, unambiguous user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria.
- Model and document current and future state workflows, ensuring shared understanding across business and technical teams and identifying opportunities for optimization.
- Continuously validate requirements and solutions with stakeholders to ensure alignment with desired business outcomes and user value.
- Own and maintain the product backlog, including prioritization, refinement, and ensuring readiness for sprint planning.
- Clarify requirements and resolve open questions before and during iteration planning by updating artifacts and maintaining traceability of changes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (developers, QA, UX, DevOps, Scrum Master) to co-create solutions and remove impediments impacting delivery.
- Apply Agile and Scrum principles to support iterative delivery, continuous feedback, and ongoing process improvement.
- Leverage user research and design thinking methodologies to deeply understand user needs and align product direction with business goals.
- Create and maintain UX artifacts such as personas, journey maps, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and mockups to guide development and enhance user experience.
- Oversee end-to-end design execution, from concept through to final handoff, ensuring usability and consistency.
- Ensure quality and traceability of requirements throughout the development lifecycle, supporting DevOps and QA practices.
- Contribute to and support DevOps practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and test-driven development.
- Participate in backlog estimation and planning, leveraging knowledge of team capacity and velocity to guide realistic commitments.
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including backlog grooming, sprint planning, daily scrums, and retrospectives.
- Provide training and ongoing support to business users, including ad hoc guidance and knowledge sharing.
- Facilitate cross-training and mentor team members, fostering collaboration and shared ownership of outcomes.
- Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities across processes, tools, and team collaboration.
- Contribute to organizational standards and architecture, supporting the evolution of DevOps and product practices.
- Act as a subject matter expert and key contributor within the broader engineering and product community.
- Provide strategic and tactical feedback to enhance the overall platform and product ecosystem.
- University degree in Computer Science or Business Administration or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
- 5+ years working experience as a Business Analyst
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Ability to take a business problem from discovery through analysis, solution evaluation, design, technical impact assessment, delivery, validation, and measurable business outcome.
- Analytical and critical-thinking skills — able to challenge assumptions, investigate ambiguity, conduct interviews, create business process definition document, and make evidence-based recommendations.
- Technical literacy — understands software development, architecture, APIs, databases, data flows, integrations, testing, and DevOps.
- Systems thinking — understands how changes to one process or system can affect other products, applications, data, and business processes.
- Requirements traceability — maintains a clear connection between the business problem, requirements, solution, testing, and expected outcome.
- Stakeholder collaboration — can effectively work with business users, architects, developers, QA, UX, DevOps, and product teams.
- Communication — can translate complex business and technical concepts between business and engineering audiences.
- Continuous improvement mindset — looks beyond delivering the immediate requirement to identify opportunities to simplify, automate, optimize, or improve the broader solution.
- Preferred – experience working in the public sector particularly in a regulated environment
- Preferred – experience applying Generative AI and Agentic AI to improve business processes, software delivery, or customer experiences.
