Job Description
The Lab Sampling Technician is responsible for the safe, accurate, and compliant collection of field samples including water, gas, hydrocarbons, and soil/ground materials. This role supports laboratory analysis, production optimization, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance by ensuring high-quality sample integrity from field collection through delivery to laboratory facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Field Sampling & Collection
- Collect representative samples from oil & gas operations including:
- Produced water, surface water, and groundwater
- Natural gas streams and vapor samples
- Crude oil, bitumen, condensate, and refined liquids
- Soil and sediment for environmental monitoring
- Perform sampling at various locations such as:
- Wellheads, separators, tanks, pipelines, and processing facilities
- Battery sites, pump stations, and disposal systems
- Follow standardized sampling methods (ASTM, API, company SOPs)
Sample Handling & Documentation
- Properly label, preserve, and store samples according to regulatory and lab standards
- Maintain strict chain-of-custody documentation
- Ensure accurate data logging in field notebooks or digital systems
- Prepare samples for transportation to internal or third-party laboratories
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Adhere to all Cenovus and regulatory HSE policies, including:
- Safe work practices in hazardous environments (H2S, confined space, etc.)
- Proper use of PPE and gas detection equipment
- Participate in hazard assessments, safety meetings, and incident reporting
- Ensure environmental sampling aligns with Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and federal requirements
Equipment, Operation & Maintenance
- Operate and maintain field sampling equipment such as:
- Sample cylinders, bailers, pumps, and probes
- Gas sampling containers and flow measurement tools
- Calibrate, clean, and troubleshoot equipment to maintain data integrity
- Coordinate with lab personnel for quality assurance and control
Qualifications
Education:
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• High school education, or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
• Ability to work long hours with physically demanding work, often outdoors and in the elements
Physical & Work Conditions
- Frequent travel to remote field locations
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions (extreme cold/heat)
- Ability to:
- Lift up to 25–50 lbs
- Work around heavy equipment and industrial hazards
- Rotation 11.43 Hrs Per day, 7 on 7 off Fly in Fly Out (or Busing available)
