Job Description
BMO is currently sourcing for a Manager, Corporate Risk & Insurance. This is a hybrid contract role in Toronto requiring 3 days per week onsite.
Role Overview:
The Manager, Corporate Risk & Insurance, is part of the global Corporate Risk and Insurance team, responsible for providing claims expertise to minimize the cost and cash flow impact of accidental losses. The role primarily focuses on Commercial General Liability (CGL), Commercial Auto, and subrogation/recovery claims, while supporting insurance procurement and reviewing insurance-related contract language. Despite the title, this is not a people management role - the position manages relationships with third-party adjusters, insurers, brokers, and internal stakeholders rather than direct reports. The role supports risk management and insurance functions critical to protecting the organization's assets and operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Settle losses for corporate insurance programs, with primary responsibility for Commercial General Liability (CGL), Commercial Auto, and subrogation/recovery claims, by reporting losses, providing loss control advice, interpreting coverage, and liaising with business units, adjusters, and external counsel.
- Support US Workers' Compensation claims as required (experience is considered an asset but is not mandatory).
- Support subrogation and recovery decisions, coordinating with BMO Legal and Lines of Business as needed.
- Manage third-party claims adjusters to ensure quality service delivery, cost control, and timely claim resolution.
- Review and audit third-party adjuster files and fulfill reporting requirements.
- Review and advise on insurance contract language in vendor, lease, procurement, and customer agreements.
- Support Global Third-Party Risk Management by reviewing insurance requirements and reconciling certificates of insurance.
- Provide input on corporate policies, standards, and procedures related to insurance and risk management.
- Deliver responsive and professional service to internal and external customers across insurance coverage, claims, risk control, certificates, accounting, and administration.
- Guide business units through claims processes following loss events while building strong relationships across Legal, Corporate Real Estate, US Human Resources, Employee Relations, and other key stakeholders.
Must-Have Skills:
- University degree.
- 3–5 years of experience in commercial insurance claims, corporate risk and insurance, commercial insurance brokerage, or a commercial insurance carrier.
- Hands-on experience with Commercial General Liability (CGL) and/or Commercial Auto claims.
- Practical knowledge of claims handling in Canada; exposure to U.S. claims is an asset.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong understanding of commercial insurance practices, claims management, subrogation, and risk management techniques.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple internal and external stakeholders.
Nice to Have Skills:
- Completion or partial completion of CIP or CRM designation.
- Experience or knowledge of US Workers' Compensation.
- Experience with subrogation and recovery.
- Experience reviewing insurance language within commercial contracts.
Ideal Candidate:
- Commercial insurance experience is the priority; experience with a commercial insurer is preferred, although strong candidates from personal lines with relevant transferable claims experience will also be considered.
- Experience collaborating with brokers, insurers, adjusters, and legal partners in claims management and insurance procurement.
- Ability to review and interpret insurance-related contract language in support of procurement and Global Third-Party Risk Management.
- Experience managing third-party adjuster relationships, service quality, and vendor performance.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across numerous business partners and communicate effectively by phone and email.
- Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment where training and support are provided, rather than being expected to be fully independent on day one.
- Understands that the "Manager" title reflects the job grade and relationship management responsibilities - not people management.
