Job Description
Extrusion Die Designer:
On behalf of our Manufacturing client, Procom is searching for an Extrusion Die Designer for a permanent role. This position is onsite at our client’s North East, Pennsylvania office.
Extrusion Die Designer - Job Description:
The Extrusion Die Designer is responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of extrusion dies and related tooling used in production. This role involves collaboration with Manufacturing/Toolroom, Quality, and Production teams to deliver robust die designs that enhance performance, reduce scrap, and improve throughput. The designer also supports die tryouts, troubleshooting, engineering changes, and documentation to ensure consistent, manufacturable, and maintainable tooling solutions.
Extrusion Die Designer - Responsibilities:
• Design and develop extrusion dies and related tooling/components from concept through release, considering manufacturability, serviceability, and cost.
• Create and maintain engineering drawings, models, and specifications (2D/3D) including GD&T and critical-to-quality features.
• Support die builds with the toolroom/machining team by answering design questions, managing revisions, and ensuring designs align with shop capabilities.
• Participate in die tryouts and production trials; troubleshoot flow, wear, dimensional issues, surface finish, and downstream defects tied to tooling design.
• Drive continuous improvement through design changes that increase die life, improve yield, reduce downtime, and simplify maintenance.
• Develop and maintain engineering documentation (BOMs, revision control, design standards, work instructions as needed).
• Conduct design reviews and risk assessments (tolerance stack-ups, failure modes, design margins).
• Collaborate with Quality on root cause analysis for tooling-related defects and implement corrective actions via design improvements.
• Support sourcing and evaluation of tooling materials, heat treatment, coatings, and component standardization.
• Interface with internal stakeholders and customers/suppliers to clarify requirements, timelines, and change impacts.
Extrusion Die Designer - Mandatory Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• Extrusion dies experience in designing, modifying, or supporting extrusion die tooling in production.
• 3+ years of Design Engineering experience in tooling, extrusion, machining, or precision manufacturing.
• Strong CAD skills (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, or similar) and ability to produce release-ready drawings.
• Proficiency with blueprint reading and GD&T; ability to define datums and functional tolerances for tooling components.
• Practical understanding of machining processes, fits, materials, and heat treat/coating impacts on tool performance.
• Hands-on approach: able to work directly with the floor/toolroom to resolve build and performance issues.
Extrusion Die Designer – Nice-to-Have Skills:
• Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis and design for manufacturability (DFM).
• Tooling life-cycle improvement (wear analysis, material selection, coatings).
• Document control / ECO processes in a regulated or ISO 9001 environment.
• Basic simulation/analysis exposure (flow, thermal, FEA) as applicable to extrusion tooling.
