JBoss Design + Ansible Automation Engineer

Job Description

BMO is currently sourcing for a Technical Specialist. This is a hybrid contract role in Toronto (minimum 2 days in office per week).

Role Overview

This role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining resilient, secure, and scalable JBoss Web Server (JWS) and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) environments. It involves developing and managing Ansible-based automation for provisioning, configuration, patching, and lifecycle management across development, staging, and production platforms. The position supports collaboration with Infrastructure and Security teams to ensure high availability, performance optimization, and compliance for enterprise Java application hosting.

Key Responsibilities

• Design reverse proxy and application tier topologies including single or dual JBoss Web Server layers with TLS termination and load balancing.
• Perform performance tuning including MPM, JVM sizing, garbage collection, and connection management.
• Implement high availability and scaling strategies such as multi-AZ design, zero-downtime rolling deployments, and canary releases.
• Apply security hardening measures including TLS 1.2+, strong cipher suites, header hardening, and JBoss-specific security configurations.
• Manage lifecycle activities such as patching, upgrading, and configuration rollouts using Ansible with drift detection and remediation.
• Develop idempotent Ansible roles and playbooks for OS hardening, JBoss installation, configuration, application deployment, and integrations.
• Collaborate with application teams to define capacity, deployment patterns, and maintain governance through standards, runbooks, and DR testing.

Must-Have Skills

• 5+ years administering JBoss Web Server and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform in production environments.
• 5+ years experience with Ansible including roles, collections, Molecule, and CI/CD integration.
• Strong Linux (RHEL) administration skills.
• Networking fundamentals including TLS/PKI and load balancing.
• Basic JVM operation knowledge including heap and garbage collection tuning.
• Experience deploying Java web applications.

Nice to Have Skills

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), GitOps, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of security frameworks such as CIS, SOC2, ISO, or PCI compliance.
• Familiarity with multi-AZ/region deployment strategies and blue/green or canary deployment techniques.
• Experience with monitoring integrations like JMX exporter and mod_status.

Ideal Candidate

• Strong automation skills with a focus on operational excellence and lifecycle management.
• Experience collaborating across infrastructure, security, and application teams to deliver compliant and optimized platforms.
