Job Description
BMO is currently sourcing for an Operations Data Analyst, Client Onboarding, to support the Operational Excellence team within Capital Markets Client Onboarding.
This is a hybrid contract role in Toronto (4 days in office per week). The contract term is 18 months.
Role Overview
The Operations Data Analyst supports data quality, process efficiency, and operational risk mitigation across Capital Markets client onboarding activities. The role involves analyzing operational and regulatory data, identifying process improvement opportunities, documenting business requirements, and building reporting and automation solutions. The analyst works with Operations, Technology, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Front Office stakeholders on improvement and remediation initiatives. This is an early career role with guidance provided as knowledge of Client Onboarding, Capital Markets, and the regulatory environment develops.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze onboarding, operational, and regulatory datasets to identify trends, exceptions, control gaps, and process improvement opportunities
- Perform data reconciliations, root cause analysis, and exception reporting
- Build and maintain dashboards, scorecards, and management reporting using Power BI, Excel, and SharePoint
- Support regulatory and remediation programs through data analysis, impact assessments, data mapping, and status tracking
- Document business requirements, process maps, and current state and future state workflows for operational and technology initiatives
- Develop and maintain governed low-code and no-code solutions using Power Automate, Power Apps, Forms, and SharePoint to reduce manual effort and operational risk
- Maintain project trackers, risk logs, action item inventories, and project documentation, and monitor milestones and issue resolution
Must-Have Skills
- Undergraduate degree in a STEM or Finance related discipline
- 0 to 1 year of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, research, academic projects, and capstone work
- Strong Excel skills including formulas, PivotTables, charts, and data cleaning
- Experience with Power BI or another data visualization tool, gained through coursework, internships, co-ops, capstone projects, or employment
- Foundational SQL and data analysis skills
- Exposure to Microsoft 365 tools such as SharePoint, Power Automate, Power Apps, or Forms, or comparable low-code and no-code platforms
- Exposure to process mapping tools such as Visio, Lucidchart, or equivalent
- Ability to document analysis, logic, controls, and user instructions, and to present findings clearly
- Practical AI literacy, including effective prompting, validating AI generated outputs, protecting confidential information, documenting assumptions, and applying human review
- Interest in learning Capital Markets onboarding, AML/KYC, data governance, and the regulatory environment, with no prior industry knowledge required
Nice to Have Skills
- Exposure to Power Query
- VBA
- Exposure to Python or another analytics language
- Exposure to Microsoft Copilot or comparable enterprise AI tools
- Working knowledge of trading products across Global Markets, and Investment and Corporate Banking products
- Working knowledge of industry trends, regulations, and the competitive marketplace
- Familiarity with regulations such as CIRO, FINRA, FATCA/CRS, Dodd-Frank, SEC Security-Based Swaps, Canadian Trade Reporting, and NI 93-101
Ideal Candidate
- Recent graduate or early career analyst with a portfolio, class project, or work sample demonstrating data analysis, dashboarding, automation, or AI assisted problem solving
- Exposure to Lean or operational excellence methodology through coursework, a co-op, or a process improvement project
- Prior internship or co-op experience in financial services or another regulated environment
- Experience producing analysis, reporting, or automation that was used by stakeholders outside the immediate team
